40 years ago: A Dark Period in the Company's History
Opening of the Fez Plaza, Fez, Morocco. It did not appear in the Westin property list nor on consolidated financial reports, and was known only to a select few in the company. As a favor to then President Nixon, Eddie Carlson set the wheels in motion to manage this newly constructed property located adjacent to the U.S. Embassy in Fez. It was classified as a "dark ops" project on behalf of the CIA and U.S. ally country covert operatives.
Unfortunately, all the WIH associates assigned to the project are deceased.
Pictured are members of the staff, who were flown in from Ireland and housed in military barracks; company officials and the hotel as it looks today.
The property is now known as the Palais Medina & Spa (Source: FN Archive)
