Thanks to Larry Dustin for passing this bit of history along...the Space Needle, opened for the 1962 World's Fair was a dream of Edward E. (Eddie) Carlson, and was operated by Westin for many years.
From the first concrete pour in May 1961 to the opening of the World's Fair in 1962, the Gulacsik Collection offers a comprehensive view of the Space Needle’s construction. With over 2,400 images and a notebook detailing day by day construction details, the collection offers a fascinating and thorough view of the Needle’s creation.
George Gulacsik was a professional photographer, graphic artist and sculptor. His photographs were donated to the library by his wife, Sally Gulacsik, following George's passing in 2010 and digitized with the help of the Space Needle Foundation. Many of the images from this collection appeared in Space Needle USA, a promotional booklet on the Needle's construction published in 1962.
